Hi! Welcome to my blog! I can't wait to see what we learn this semester and how as future teachers we can better help our students. I am a student teacher and I do know how it feels to be a second language learner so I'm excited to see how I can support my future students!

Hi Laura! It was so great to see your video. I too want to teach math one day, but not ELA so much because it is not a strong subject of mine. It was so interesting watching your video because you had said that you essentially forgot how to speak Spanish while trying to better your English. I can’t imagine how that must have felt. While trying to learn a new language, you forgot your own native language. According to Ortega “the brain is pre-programmed to be shaped by that experience in dramatic ways, but only if it occurs within a biologically specified time period” (Ortega, 2013, 13).

Hi Jordin! Yes unfortunately I did essentially forget it because I felt like there was so much pressure to learn English that Spanish was no longer a priority. I wish when I was in school that my teachers made Spanish a priority too. According to Ortega “In many parts of the globe, most children grow up speaking two or more languages simultaneously”(Ortega, 2013, 4), I find it strange that I could not learn two languages at the same time.

Hi Laura!
DeleteI understand where you are coming from hen you say that you wish you would have learn Spanish a little bit more. After all, I struggle with the same thing often times. I was born in El Salvador and was brought to America when I was three eras old so even though I learned Spanish, I always struggle with reading it and writing it. According to Ortega, how bilingual speakers switch and alternate between their two (or more) language (Ortega, 2013). That happens to me a lot since I feel like I do not have the proper training in Spanish as I wish I could have.

Hi Marina! Wow that is so cool my parents are from El Salvador too and my brother was born there! We had very similar situations when it came time to learn English I find it weird that we had trouble retaining both languages. According to Ortega “In many parts of the globe, most children grow up speaking two or more languages simultaneously”(Ortega, 2013, 4),I wonder why we could not have kept both Spanish and English.
DeleteHi Laure! It was great watching your video and learning about your English and Spanish language learning experience! I think the fact that you struggled to maintain your Spanish language will help you to encourage your students to práctice and maintain their naive language at home. This will help you to be an encouraging and positive teacher with your wn experiences to back you up. Ortega says “whether we grow up with one, two or several languages, in most cases we will learn additional languages later in life” (Ortega, 2013, p.18) so rest assured, its never to let to continue your language learning experience now!
